Descriptive Analysis of the College Fraternity
Many people are unsure of whether or not being in a college fraternity/ sorority is right for them. Being in a college fraternity offers you a very unique college experience. Frats have been part of the college experience for hundreds of years now. There are many positive aspects to being in a college fraternity/sorority.The most important aspect frats offer is the fact that you will have a large support system through out your college years. Being in a college fraternity/sorority guarantees you will always have someone to help you, coach you, support you and guide you in any situation whether it academic or personal. Frats and sororities pride themselves on being a tight knit group, willing to offer support and assistance to all of their “brothers” and “sisters.”

Another great aspect of being part of a college fraternity is the way you will be helping the community. Frats and sororities all participate in community service and charitable events. Being in a college fraternity or sorority means giving back to the community. You will spend a lot of time not only raising money for your fraternity or sorority, but also helping out your community through some sort of community service. Frats have an allotted amount of time they must devote to community service, but most frats exceed that amount because they want to help as much as they can.A college fraternity will have many rituals and traditions that its members will take part in. Some of these traditions and rituals were implemented when the first chapter was started. Having said this many frats have a strict policy that these rituals cannot be spoken about outside the fraternity house. Being part of a college fraternity means respecting these rituals and what they stand for. Frats will not tolerate anyone disrespecting these traditions, and it is not taken lightly when someone does.
Being part of a college fraternity/ sorority has become a necessity for many co-eds. During the “rush” process it is not uncommon to see lines of students outside the frats waiting their turn for an opportunity to pledge the college fraternity/sorority of their choice. Being part of a college fraternity has become a sort of cultural phenomenon. This is most likely due the portrayal of frats on TV and movies.
This depiction of frats has severely strayed from the actual college fraternity experience. The previously mentioned attributes are what frats are all about. It is not about wild parties, heavy drinking, and nasty hazing procedures. It is about brotherhood/sisterhood, helping the community, and helping each other strive for academic excellence and instilling leadership qualities in each an every member.Being part of a college fraternity/sorority is considered to be an honor by those who wish to take part in the experience. They realize the dedication it takes and are hopeful that their time spent in the fraternity will result in positive changes in the community through the community service they are providing. Also these students understand the value of teamwork and what it is to help someone strive to be the best person they can be personally and academically.
